Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are specialised rigid contact lenses that land
comfortably on the sclera (the whites of the eye). The lenses
allow for a fluid reservoir layer to sit between the lens and the
cornea, which can have many useful purposes.

The fluid reservoir can reduce refractive errors that come from the irregularity of the shape of the cornea or high refractive errors for which it is difficult to correct with glasses. It also helps protect eyes that are severely dry, or damaged due to trauma or post-surgical conditions.

Here are common conditions that for which scleral lenses could be indicated:
  • Keratoconus
  • Keratoglobus
  • Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
  • Corneal Scarring
  • Chemical Burn Injury
  • Irregular or High Astigmatism
  • Poor outcome from previous corneal surgery
    • Radial Keratectomy (RK)
    • Laser Refractive Surgery
    • Corneal Grafts/Transplants that need better vision
  • Severe Dry Eyes
  • Sjögren's Syndrome
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

Our optometrist, who has been trained as an advanced contact lens practitioner, uses specialised software to design the scleral lenses to make sure that it is healthy and safe for the eye, whilst providing optimal comfort and vision. Using OCT technology, the optometrist can look at the lens fitting for an extremely customised fit to the degree of microns.
